Theodoret of Cyrus

This took place during the period of exile; however, God illustrated it symbolically, likening it to an unfaithful spouse, who is stoned, executed, and consumed by fire. Therefore, maintaining the same symbolism, He added, "And in thee shall vengeance be wrought before many wives." He does not refer to wives literally; rather, he uses this term to denote the cities symbolically, for he presents the city of Jerusalem as a woman standing before judgment. This analogy helps us grasp the purpose behind the punishment. "And I will turn thee from fornication, and thou shalt not hire any man." When you have lost your prosperity and have been taken into exile, you will have nothing left to offer in exchange for this meager payment; instead, famine will make amends for you.
