Theodoret of Cyrus
The prophets Joel, Hosea, Micah, and others foretold the fate of these nations. Hosea proclaims: And I will establish a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the creeping things of the earth; I will abolish the bow, the sword, and warfare, removing them from the land, and I will dwell among you in assurance (Hosea 2:18). Joel states: Behold, I will judge them there concerning my people and my inheritance, Israel (Joel 3:1-2). Micah similarly declares: Be feeble and be strong in the land of Zion, like a woman in labor; for now you shall leave the city and dwell in the land, coming to Babylon: from there the Lord your God will rescue you from your adversaries.

And now the multitude of the nations has assembled against you, saying, Let us rejoice, and our eyes will behold Zion. But they did not grasp the thoughts of the Lord, nor did they comprehend His plans, for He had gathered them like sheaves on the threshing floor. Arise and strike down the children of Zion, for I will give you horns of iron, and your fingers shall be like brass; you shall weaken many men and lay their multitude before the Lord, presenting their strength before the Lord of all the earth (Micah 4:10-13). Zechariah also declares, This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of Hosts. Who are you, O great mountain, before Zerubbabel? You shall be made level (Zechariah 4:6-7). This clearly indicates that when the Jews returned from captivity, these nations rose up against them but were ultimately subdued by the hand of God.
