Ezekiel 38:16Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

For this reason, proclaim, O son of man, and call out to Gog: This is what the Lord Adonai declares: Is it not on that day when My people Israel will dwell in security that you will comprehend and rise? And you will come from your place at the farthest north, accompanied by many nations, all mounted on horses, a vast multitude, and numerous strong warriors, and you will approach My people Israel like a cloud covering the land: it will come to pass in the last days, specifically after Israel's restoration, for these matters have been previously stated: When My people Israel shall dwell in safety, you will comprehend and rise.

Likewise, the blessed Moses said: I will reveal to them what the final days will hold, for this generation is corrupted; he does not refer to the last days as the end, nor does he mean the time of their dispersal. I will bring you to My land, that all the nations may witness My sanctification in you before their eyes, O Gog! Now, the nations no longer require Gog to impart the knowledge of the God of all; they have obtained this understanding from the Lord Christ. Previously, before the Incarnation of the Lord, such miracles were essential. For when Sennacherib devastated thousands of soldiers in Judah, this miracle was how the nations recognized the God of all mankind. Thus, the blessed David exclaims, ‘God is known in Judah: in Israel His name is exalted.’ And in the defeat of these nations in Judah, all, recognizing the might of the God of all, erupted into song. Therefore, God declares, Let all the nations witness My sanctification in you; meaning, when I am glorified, having revealed My power.
