The Lord spoke to me, saying, “Son of man, direct your attention toward the mountains of Israel and prophesy to them.” Though the mountains lack the capacity for reason and are lifeless, speech is given to them as a rebuke to those who do possess understanding. This mirrors the event when, during the reign of Jeroboam, the man of God called out to the altar (1 Kings 13:2).

“O mountains of Israel, listen to the word of the Lord; thus says the Lord to the mountains, the hills, the rocks, and the wilderness: I will bring a sword against you, your heights will be laid waste, your dwellings will be destroyed, your idols will be shattered, and I will bring your plagues before your false gods.” The existence of idols in these locations serves as a forewarning of impending invaders, widespread violence, and the devastation of idol worshippers’ temples.
