One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

The Lord spoke to me, saying, Son of man, direct your attention towards the mountains of Israel and proclaim to them. Although the mountains lack the capacity for thought and are lifeless, it is fitting that those endowed with reason receive rebuke through words addressed to the inanimate. This echoes the time of Jeroboam when the prophet called out against the altar (1 Kings 13:2). O mountains of Israel, listen to the word of the Lord: thus says the Lord to the mountains, hills, rocks, and wilderness: Look, I will bring a sword upon you, your heights will be laid waste, your altars will be destroyed, your idols will be shattered, and I will bring your calamities upon your idols. The existence of altars to false gods in these regions indicates an impending invasion by foes, resulting in death and the devastation of idol temples.
