The plates are shallow bowls representing the purity of the hearts of sincere individuals, who are unable to disguise their dishonest thoughts and express openly what they truly feel. The knives serve to cut and partition the offerings into proper portions, ensuring that once the sacrifice is prepared, a portion is consumed by fire on the altar, while another is allocated to the priests and Levites who present the sacrifice. These knives symbolize those within the Church endowed with the gift of discernment, who adeptly recognize the grace of salvation embodied in Christ. The chalices, or drinking vessels, metaphorically denote those who are often filled with the fervent love that dwells within them.
