The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Beda Venerabilis

7th centuryChurch Father

It has frequently been noted that the treasures such as silver, gold, and vessels sent from Babylon to Jerusalem symbolize souls who have turned to the Lord, leaving behind the turmoil and sins of this world. Therefore, it was essential for Ezra to assign such vessels to the priests, enabling them to transport these items to Jerusalem. All those desiring to join the community of the holy Church must undergo baptism and dedicate themselves to the Lord through the imposition of hands by the priests. Similarly, individuals who have strayed from the Church's fellowship due to sin and find themselves ensnared by the devil, having fallen into the grasp of the king of Babylon, must seek reconciliation with the holy Church through repentance facilitated by the ministers. It is significant that twelve priests were appointed for this ministry, reflecting the twelve apostles who were instrumental in establishing the Church globally and whose legacy ensures its continual growth until the end of time.
