John Chrysostom

therefore he quickly received healing: 'and there was,' it is stated, 'the word of the Lord to him.' Observe the precision of the Scripture: it is recorded that the Lord did not permit the righteous man even a moment to mourn, but granted him swift comfort and alleviated his grief through communication: 'and it was,' it is said, 'the word of the Lord was spoken to him, and it was declared: he shall not be your heir, but he who will come forth from your loins shall be your heir.' Is this, he asks, what you dread? Is this what adds to your sorrow?

Understand, therefore, that this one shall not be your heir, 'but he who will come forth from your loins shall be your heir.' Do not focus on human limitations, nor dwell on your old age or Sarah's barrenness, but trust in the power of Him who has promised you. Instead of being disheartened, find comfort and be assured that an heir will indeed come forth from you.

Cyrill of Alexandria

However, God did not allow the righteous man to remain in grief for an extended period. He swiftly assured him of a descendant through Isaac.

If the words of Abraham do not provide adequate guidance for correction, consider the declaration of God that rebukes such a claim to inheritance: "He shall not be your heir, but the one who comes from you shall be your heir." Who else could He be referring to? Hagar did bear a son named Ishmael, yet God does not refer to him; instead, He speaks of the blessed Isaac. Thus, He emphasizes, "The one who shall come from you." Born within the bonds of marriage, he is genuinely a descendant of Abraham. In Isaac, we find the true and rightful Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the opening passages of Matthew's Gospel declare He is the Son of Abraham. He embodies the authentic heir of Abraham's legacy, illuminating the lineage of the patriarch.

Through Him, Abraham glimpsed the glory of his descendants, shining as brilliantly as the stars in the heavens. The Apostle affirms, "Just as one star differs from another in glory, so also is the resurrection of the dead." By uniting individuals, who typically remain concealed by death in the earth, with His Resurrection, the Lord has transformed them into participants of the heavenly Kingdom.

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

The one who comes from your own body shall be your heir. In this context, through the situation of Abram's household, the Lord illuminates His merciful promise: He reveals that the promised offspring will be linked to the biological offspring.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

Abram, troubled by his lack of a father, considers the possibility of adopting someone from his household. However, the Lord comforts him with a direct promise that his own child, rather than a foreigner, will be his rightful heir.
