This illustrates how a captive unexpectedly ascends to sovereignty over all of Egypt; the one who was confined by the chief master is now elevated to the pinnacle of esteem by the monarch. His former oppressor realizes, against all likelihood, that the individual he had imprisoned for adultery now wields authority over the entirety of Egypt. Do you understand what it signifies to face trials with composure? This is the reason Paul asserts, ‘from tribulation comes patience, from patience comes experience, from experience comes hope, and hope does not put us to shame’ (Rom. 5:3-5). Observe how the tribulations Joseph faced with steadfastness; his perseverance deepened his experience, and with that experience, he cultivated a robust hope, and indeed, hope did not disappoint.

Joseph interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh's officials, the cupbearer and the baker, who were locked away. Thus, the divinely favored Joseph became a source of great amazement, as noted in Scripture (Gen. 40:16, Gen. 41:12 ff.; cf. Gen. 40:1-23). When Pharaoh had a dream depicting a brief period of abundance followed by a severe famine—one where he saw fat and lean cattle, as well as healthy and withered ears of grain—and none of Egypt’s wise men could provide an explanation, it was proclaimed that Joseph had the ability to interpret dreams. He came forth to clarify Pharaoh’s vision. Astonished by his insight, Pharaoh appointed him governor and ruler of the land (Gen. 41:40; cf. Gen. 41:1-57).

Likewise, Christ faced persecution, as previously mentioned, reflecting the trials of the holy Apostles. The individuals under discussion, who were deeply engaged in their endeavors and possessed profound wisdom to unveil hidden truths, first gained recognition from those in authority, and subsequently from the earthly rulers themselves. These leaders, convinced of their own foresight, acknowledged through divine revelation in the Spirit that these individuals were worthy of being builders and leaders among the nations. They were equipped to share the life-giving pure doctrine, the divine word from above, and to provide the kind of education that leads to the highest good.

The Holy Fathers recognize Joseph as a profound foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, highlighting the parallels between the elevation of Egypt's savior and the glory of the world's Savior. Joseph, after being released from imprisonment, is raised to a position of authority and granted limitless power over all the lands of Egypt. Similarly, Jesus Christ, emerging from the grave triumphantly, is bestowed by His Father with sovereignty over both heaven and earth.
