2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

The wealth of the unjust will vanish like a fleeting speck from a wheel and like dust blown away, akin to a demon before the Lord of hosts. He addresses those who stirred up anger against Christ and turned over the Savior to be crucified, boldly conspired to bring about the death of the Source of Salvation, even though He arose as the God-man. He declares that such riches will dissipate like dust and disappear quickly, not in a distant future, but rather in an instant. This work will be accomplished by the Lord of hosts, and it was essential for Him to reveal this to them, so they would not be misled by empty hopes of evading it.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

This encounter will bring renewal to Jerusalem while condemning the Assyrians, characterized by a powerful presence that evokes fear and awe, accompanied by a mighty voice, storms, and blazing flames.
