Isaiah 33:20Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Look upon Sion the city of our solemnity: thy eyes shall see Jerusalem, a rich habitation, a tabernacle that cannot be removed: neither shall the nails thereof be taken away for ever, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

In affirming the words spoken by God to the misguided scribes of the Jews and those who offered wicked advice, He once again speaks on behalf of the seekers of truth who have come to understand the manifestation of Christ: Look, Zion is our salvation. This refers either to the Church present on earth or to the splendid city in heaven, the highest realm that nourishes the saints. Regardless of whether one speaks of the earthly Church or envisions this celestial city, the same essence is conveyed; for those who dwell within the earthly Church will ultimately be part of this exalted heavenly city. Therefore, those who recognize Zion, which embodies our salvation in Christ, rejoice with exuberance and encourage one another in their joy.

In response, the Divine word interjects into their conversation, saying, "Thy eyes shall see, O Jerusalem, a rich city," echoing the imagery of the ancient tabernacle that existed in the wilderness. Zion is called rich, and it is proclaimed that the tabernacle will stand unshakeable, built upon enduring ties and pillars established forever. The Church possesses an unwavering stability, such that even the gates of hell, as the Lord states, shall not prevail against it.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Consider Zion, the sacred city of our celebrations. The prophet extols the city of God, for it was the sole location where the people of Israel could observe feasts and offer sacrifices in accordance with the law. Your gaze will behold Jerusalem, a flourishing community, a dwelling place that shall remain unmovable, if it is Your will that it stand firm.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Gaze upon Zion, the city of our victory; your eyes shall behold Jerusalem, a glorious dwelling, an unmovable sanctuary, whose stakes shall never be uprooted and whose cords shall remain unbroken forever. There, the Lord is exalted; the expanse is vast, and no vessel shall navigate its waters, nor shall any mighty ship traverse it. For the Lord is our judge, our legislator, our sovereign; He will deliver us. Your ropes are slackened and will not hold strong; likewise, your mast shall be such that you cannot unfurl a banner upon it. Then, the bounty from numerous conquests shall be shared; the weak shall gather the spoils. And the neighboring nations shall not declare, “I am diminished”; wrongdoing shall be removed from the inhabitants.

The righteous, to whom it has been declared, “Your heart shall be taught in reverence,” shall not witness a foolish people, nor those of whom you have previously heard: “A King in His splendor shall your eyes behold!” Look upon Zion, the city of our triumph; observe the Church of Christ, where true victory resides: your eyes shall witness a revelation of the world and unexpected treasures that no eye has seen, nor ear has heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man, as well as an unshakable sanctuary. For prior to the sanctuary possessed by the people of Judah, it was vulnerable and destroyed. Its stakes shall stand firm forever, and its cords shall be strong, allowing the Lord to reside there, the place for all the rivers and streams that flow, which no man from outside shall navigate, nor shall the great vessel, emblematic of the adversary, be able to cross. The Lord Himself is our judge, prince, king, and Savior, and under His shield, we fear not the fears of others. This is proclaimed of Zion, our city of victory, and of Jerusalem, a dwelling place of great abundance, which the Lord shall encompass and bolster with His rivers. Now regarding the earthly Jerusalem, it is said that the cords of its tabernacle are loosened and cannot uphold its curtains, and its mast, once adorned with splendid sails, has fallen due to the severed cords, rendering it unfit for navigation and for displaying a banner. Yet, after their vessel is wrecked, and the sanctuary is dismantled, with the ropes torn on both sides, the victors will distribute the spoils, who, despite their own frailty, will be labeled as lame; nevertheless, empowered by divine grace, they shall remain unwearied, nor will they utter, “I am fatigued.” For all who are among them will have iniquity and transgression lifted from them, as they have fulfilled the will of God.
