Ephraem the Syrian

The Lord spoke to me, saying, Acquire for yourself a linen loincloth and wear it around your waist, but do not immerse it in water. Through these two symbols, the prophet is tasked with conveying to the people their transgressions and impending exile. Initially, God instructs the prophet to procure a new loincloth from the weaver, one that has not yet been washed or soaked in water. Following this, the Lord commands the prophet to fasten it around himself, then to remove it and journey to the river Euphrates to bury it, hiding it there until it decays. This imagery illustrates how God’s people had experienced disgrace in Egypt, contrasting with the honor and magnificence of their identity after their liberation from bondage. Chosen by God to be His people and treasured possession, this glory would have persisted eternally had they not marred it through sinful actions, ultimately allowing their willful rebellion to transform them into that which is decayed and tattered.
