I will disperse them like chaff at the entrance of the land of My people. I have slain and devastated My people; yet despite this, they have not turned back from their ways. What is the benefit, they often inquire of Me, when they refuse to forsake their wicked actions or feel remorse? I have scattered them like a sower to purify My threshing floor, casting them in the very gates of the earth, so that they may come close to the brink of destruction. I have inflicted death and ruin upon My people, so that through the weight of their afflictions, they might find refuge from the impending evils.

Theodoret of Cyrus

They inflicted destruction upon themselves, unwilling to abandon their falsehoods. He observes that due to the abuse of husbands, widows increased, and likewise, for the same reason, mothers suffered the loss of their children. For he states:
