Either they reasoned within themselves or even whispered quietly to one another: many prophets proclaimed God's commands and gave us words from the Spirit, but we find nothing in them like what is in this Man's words.
See, He entirely turns us away from service under the Law. He transfers us to some other order and introduces among us a new way of life. Therefore it is evident that His word does not agree with, nor resemble, the ancient things.
When He, as it is natural to think, saw such thoughts in them, He showed that He is God by nature and knows the intentions of the heart.
He takes them up and says, "Why do you not understand My speech? Because you cannot hear My word."
I knew, He says, that you cannot understand My speech or teaching. But I will tell you the reason for this and explain what obstructs it.
"You cannot hear My word." By the phrase "you cannot," He exposes their powerlessness in perfect good, because they are subject to their passions.
For enslavement to pleasures weakens the mind. By an unbridled inclination toward vice, it gives weakness to the heart and makes it sluggish and timid in the practice of virtue.
Therefore, having first been weakened by vicious inclinations and oppressed by their own passions, He says, "you cannot hear My word."
For "the ways of the Lord are right," according to what is written, "and the righteous shall walk in them, but the ungodly shall stumble in them" (Hos 14:10).
You will find something akin to this in other words of the Lord to the Pharisees: "How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?" (Jn 5:44).
Here too, their inability to believe shows the voluntary weakness of their mind, or a soul already corrupted beforehand by vainglory.
We shall also find true what Paul said: "The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him" (1 Cor 2:14).
Therefore, since they were natural, they considered foolishness the words of Him Who called them to salvation and taught the way of excellent life.
He nobly guided them toward pleasing the God Who loves good, to Whom be all honor, glory, and dominion unto the ages of ages. Amen.
