The Church Fathers on this verse

Judges 15:14Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Now when he was come to the place of the Jawbone, and the Philistines shouting went to meet him, the Spirit of the Lord came strongly upon him: and as flax is wont to be consumed at the approach of fire, so the bands with which he was bound were broken and loosed.

Investigate the Scriptures and reflect on how they attribute all supernatural achievements to the action of the Spirit. For instance, when the account of Samson, the renowned warrior, is presented, it begins by highlighting that his remarkable acts of bravery were accomplished through the Holy Spirit. The narrative states that numerous adversaries approached, yet Samson stood alone, even in bondage. What hope for liberation exists for one who is shackled? What salvation is there for a captive? How is it possible for a single individual to triumph over many? The Spirit of the Lord descended upon Samson, and he charged at his foes, using the jawbone of a donkey to slay a thousand men.

Observe the brilliance of divine Scripture, which foresaw the incredulity of those who might not witness such an event. It emphasizes: "and the Spirit of the Lord came upon Samson, and he took the jaw of an ass, and killed a thousand" (Judges 15:14-15), providing a basis for those who might question its plausibility to recognize it as the manifestation of the Spirit’s might. Thus, it is aptly stated by Moses: "how could one pursue a thousand and two drive out darkness, unless their Advocate had delivered them, and the Lord had given them up" (Deuteronomy 32:30)?

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

Upon witnessing the Philistine fighters advancing, he was filled with righteous anger, and he released his restraints.
