The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

Since the plea was ineffective and the aggressors grew increasingly persistent, the Levite surrendered his wife to them, and they violated her throughout the night. In their frenzy of madness and desire, when they heard her refusal, their lust for the young woman intensified. Dismissive of the truth, they mocked the wise counsel and disregarded the old man's daughter, deeming her possession a lesser wrongdoing. The heartfelt pleas fell on deaf ears, and despite the elderly man's desperate reach for assistance, his defense was overridden; the woman was seized and treated with contempt throughout the night.
