When the Canaanites, a nation known for their fearlessness in battle and the effectiveness of their numerous troops, turned against the Israelites, the widow took a more prominent role than others in preparing for conflict. This illustrates that individual needs were addressed not through public resources but rather through personal guidance that fulfilled a communal responsibility. From her own home, Deborah presented her son Barak as the leader of the army, demonstrating that a widow can indeed raise a valiant warrior. As a mother, she nurtured him; as a judge, she appointed him; as a brave woman, she provided him with training; and as a prophetess, she sent him forth to assured triumph.

In a time of tranquility, the woman faced no grievances or wrongdoings, while many judges among the people were culpable of significant offenses. When the Canaanites, a fearless nation famed for their victorious armies, exhibited hostility toward the Jewish community, the widow took it upon herself to be more proactive than others in preparing for battle. To illustrate that individual needs were addressed not through public means but rather through personal guidance fulfilling a communal responsibility, Devvora presented her son from her own home as the leader of the army. This demonstrates that a widow can indeed nurture a warrior. As a mother, she educated him; in her role as a judge, she appointed him; through her bravery, she guided him; and as a prophetess, she directed him toward assured triumph.
