The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

‘Thou shalt break in the wrath of Thy fury all the horns of Israel.’ The horn symbolizes leaders and authority figures. ‘Turn back his right hand from the face of the enemy, and kindle in Jacob like a flaming fire, and consume all the neighbourhood’ of him. God chose not to shield from the advances of the adversarial; rather, He is akin to a courageous leader who can effortlessly vanquish his foes yet refrains from acting, allowing the hostile to gain the upper hand. In contrast, as James states, He extended His hands toward me.
