Ephraem the Syrian

What is the reason that, ‘as soon as ... give birth to the female sex’, the period of purification is extended? Is it due to the fact that the female is regarded as more esteemed than the male, or is it because the development of the female in the womb requires more time, allowing the male child to undergo initial formation in forty days, while the female child takes eighty?

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Some interpreted the variation in the days as a result of the increased effort demanded from mothers who give birth to daughters. Consequently, the law provided them with double the time for rest.
