The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

Those who adhere to the commandments of life shall not face destruction (Psalm 48:10), even as they observe the demise of those who seem to be the wisest and most sagacious in the world. This is particularly evident in the behavior of the scribes and Pharisees, who seek the most honored positions in the synagogues, claiming to possess greater wisdom. They strive without success, believing that one can be set free for a mere didrachma, while misinterpreting the law, failing to acknowledge the spiritual value of their souls, and disregarding the singular sacrifice of the Lord’s Body by rejecting the Sacrament of Baptism. The blood of goats and calves offers no true redemption; only the blood of Christ can liberate all. The Book of Leviticus presents a shadow of Christ, not the ultimate reality. We attain freedom solely through His sacrifice, not for the price of a didrachma.
