Having demonstrated the misery of this base group of legalists, Christ extends a general rebuke to all the Jewish leaders, declaring, “Woe unto you, for ye build the tombs of the prophets, while your fathers killed them. Therefore you testify and approve the works of your fathers, for they did indeed kill them, but you build their tombs.” It is essential for us to understand the Lord's message; what sinful act do we believe they committed by constructing tombs for the saints? Were they not bestowing great honor upon them? There is no doubt of this. Thus, we must grasp what Christ is teaching us.

The ancestors of the Jews periodically executed the holy prophets when these messengers delivered God’s truth and guided them in righteousness; yet their progeny, recognizing that the prophets were sanctified and esteemed individuals, erected monuments in their memory, fitting for saints. Their forefathers had slain these prophets, but the descendants, by acknowledging their prophetic and holy stature, judged their ancestors for their acts of violence. In their bid to honor those who were murdered, they effectively accused others of wrongdoing. However, those who condemned their ancestors for such brutal killings were on the verge of committing the same offenses, or even greater transgressions. For they had murdered the Author of Life, the Savior and Redeemer of all, and augmented their wickedness toward Him with further grievous acts. Stephen was executed, not for any baseness, but because he guided them and proclaimed the truths contained within the divinely inspired Scriptures. Moreover, they committed further wrongs against every saint who shared with them the gospel of salvation. Thus, the legal experts and Pharisees faced reproach in every way, characterized by enmity towards God, pridefulness, an inclination for self-indulgence over devotion, and a pervasive disdain for salvation. This is why Christ consistently uttered the word “woe” as specifically representative of them. To God the Father be glory and dominion, with the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Among the wrongs they committed, did they not erect sepulchers for the holy ones? Did they not bestow upon them distinct honors? What uncertainty remains? It is essential to comprehend the message of Christ. Throughout history, the forebears of the Jewish people executed the prophets who delivered God's Word and guided them along the righteous path. Their offspring, acknowledging that these prophets were virtuous and sanctified, constructed memorials to them, thus bestowing honors that befit saints. While their ancestors took the lives of these holy figures, their descendants, in recognizing them as prophets and saints, assumed a position to judge those who had slain them. By choosing to show reverence to the fallen, they condemned others for their misdeeds.

Those who had criticized their ancestors for such heinous acts were poised to partake in the same or, potentially, even greater wrongs. They took the life of the Author of Life, the Redeemer and Sustainer of all. Moreover, they compounded their misdeeds by committing further atrocities against Him. Their actions against Stephen were not prompted by accusations of a disgraceful nature, but stemmed from his encouragement and his proclamation of the truths found in the divinely inspired Scriptures. Additionally, they transgressed against every saint who shared the message of salvation through the Gospel.

Here, the empty devotion of the Jews is vividly illustrated. By constructing the memorials of the prophets, they condemn their ancestors, and by replicating their ancestors' transgressions, they bring judgment upon themselves. In creating grand tombs for the prophets, they denounce the sin of murderers, yet by mimicking such actions, they reveal themselves as true successors to their fathers' wickedness. It is not merely the act of raising tombs, but the replication of those deeds that constitutes iniquity. Those who have committed greater offenses cannot escape the burdens of inherited wrongdoing, having intensified their fathers' sins by crucifying the Son of God.

He rightly stated elsewhere, “Fulfill the measure of your fathers” (Matthew 23:32), highlighting the depths of their offense against God.

This is why Wisdom sends forth apostles and prophets. Indeed, who is Wisdom if not Christ? As noted in 1 Corinthians 1:24, 30. In Matthew, it is written: “Behold, I send to you prophets and wise men” (Matthew 23:34).

This passage effectively highlights the empty superstition of the Jewish people, who, while building memorials for the prophets, actually condemned their ancestors' actions. In emulating the wrongdoings of their forebears, they brought judgment upon themselves. Constructing tombs for the prophets serves as an accusation against those who killed them, and by replicating such actions, they declare themselves recipients of their ancestors' transgressions. It is not the act of building tombs but rather the imitation of those sins that is deemed wrongful. They cannot escape the legacy of sinfulness, especially since they have exceeded their ancestors' wickedness through the crucifixion of the Son of God, a far graver sin.

Hence, He rightfully stated elsewhere, “But add to the measure of your fathers” (Matthew 23:32). There is no greater crime than turning against God. For this reason, Divine Wisdom sends forth apostles and prophets. Who embodies Wisdom if not Christ? Ultimately, it is noted in Matthew, “Behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men” (Matthew 23:34).

The Lord acknowledged the illegality of the actions taken by the lawyers, likening them to those who supported them. He condemned the harshness with which they imposed regulations they themselves did not adhere to, as well as the pride with which they embellished the graves of the prophets, their predecessors in guiding the people. Given their corrupt hearts and the hostility they harbored against Jesus and His followers, it was far more fitting to view them as heirs to those deceitful prophets and evil individuals who had previously slain the prophets.

Ultimately, He warned them of divine judgment for seizing the keys to understanding God's word, as they neither utilized it as a genuine guide to the Kingdom of God nor did they assist others in finding their way through its truths.

The construction of memorials over the graves of the slain prophets may appear to honor their memory, indicating respect rather than compassion for their assassins. However, the Pharisees, known for their pretense and hypocrisy, likely intended only to mislead the people by feigning reverence for these prophets through their memorials. Their animosity toward the final prophet, John the Baptist, and their willingness to eliminate Christ at the earliest chance, reveal their alignment with the wicked acts of their forebears. The wrongdoing of their ancestors, along with their own complicity as supporters of such actions, is further aggravated by the fact that the very emissaries of God were persecuted and expelled.

Lopuchin A.P.

Alas for them, as their false repentance led them to judge their forefathers for persecuting the prophets, while harboring the same murderous spirit that dwelt in their ancestors. They exceeded the transgressions of those before them with even greater abominations. Upon this generation would fall all the innocent blood that had been spilled on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to that of Zacharias, whom they murdered between the temple and the altar. The impending storm of divine judgment loomed over them, ready to unleash all its terrors upon their guilty heads.

Michail (Lusin)

19th centuryCommentator

You share in their hypocrisy by condemning your ancestors for persecuting the prophets, as stated in Matthew 23:30. Yet, you, their offspring, are engaging in the very actions they took, or even exceeding them.

Paul Matwejewski

A certain legal expert, upon hearing the Lord's teachings, felt insulted. He was part of a group that, through their study of the law, could present themselves as more righteous and virtuous than the Pharisees disparaged by the Savior. The lawyer addressed Jesus, saying, “Rabbi, your words provoke us. Yet the legal experts, who burden people's consciences with trivial and arbitrary human rules—those hypocrites who honor the heritage of their ancestors, who construct monuments to the prophets once slain, while their mindset mirrors that of the murderers—these are the ones destroying their own people. They have taken the key of knowledge, using it solely to tighten the door of salvation. All of them are accountable to God’s righteous judgment.

The lamentation directed at the Pharisees extends to all deceitful teachers: Woe to you too, legal experts, for you impose unbearable burdens on others and do not lighten them even with a finger. Woe to you, for while you build monuments to the prophets, your forebears were the ones who persecuted them. Indeed, you will bear witness, through your actions, that you follow in your ancestors’ footsteps by erecting their tombs. For this reason, the wisdom of God proclaims: I will send prophets and apostles to them, and they will face death and scorn. So there will be a reckoning for the blood of all the prophets, shed since the beginning of the world, from Abel to Zechariah, who was murdered between the altar and the sanctuary. Woe to you, O keepers of the law, for you have taken the key of knowledge; you will not enter yourselves, nor will you permit those who wish to enter.”
