Theophylact of Bulgaria

11th centuryChurch Father

The disciples were fearful that they had forfeited the favor bestowed upon them by their Master, which hindered their ability to expel the demon. Observe their deep respect in approaching Jesus on their own.

Tertullian

3rd centuryTeacher of the Church

Why feel disheartened? He instructed that even the most malevolent spirits are expelled through fasting. What is so surprising if, as a result, the unclean spirit is removed and the Holy Spirit is welcomed in?

Alexander Gorsky

19th centuryCommentator

Later, in private, the disciples inquired of Him why they were unable to expel the demon. The Lord replied that it was a matter of their lack of faith, as well as their need for prayer and fasting, since fasting serves to enhance the power of prayer.

According to the account of Mark the Evangelist, after Jesus had healed the boy, He went into the house. The apostles accompanied Him, and once they were alone with Him, they inquired, ‘Why were we unable to drive him out?’ He responded, ‘Because of your unbelief’ (Matthew 17:20).

Lopuchin A.P.

19th centuryCommentator

Prior to empowering His disciples to drive out demons, Jesus found that even those outside His inner circle utilized this authority on His behalf (Mark 9:38). They succeeded in their efforts. Consequently, the disciples seized the opportunity to inquire about the cause of His recent setback.

Paul Matwejewski

19th centuryCommentator

Afterward, Jesus Christ and His disciples entered a house, where they privately approached Him with the question, “Why could we not drive it out?” The blessed Theophylact notes that the apostles were concerned they might have lost the authority granted to them over demons, prompting their anxious inquiry. The Lord responded, “For your unbelief; Amen, I say to you: if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it shall move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” This powerful illustration of faith begins within the human spirit, starting as a minuscule seed, yet it grows to possess extraordinary strength, rendering everything possible. John Chrysostom remarked that the apostles did not always exhibit such faith; they occasionally showed weakness, particularly before the crucifixion, which left them imperfect. They were unable to cast out the unclean spirit because, as the Lord explained, this kind can only be driven out through prayer and fasting. “He who prays with fasting has two wings, lighter than the wind - he transcends fire and rises above the earth. Thus, such a person becomes a formidable adversary and warrior against demons, as there is no stronger individual than one who prays with sincerity.”
