Tertullian

3rd centuryTeacher of the Church

Our Lord Jesus Christ, during His time on earth, engaged openly with the people and His disciples, of whom He selected twelve to serve as teachers to the nations. He directly addressed inquiries about His identity, affirming whether He was the Son of God, in what ways He was fully human, and in what ways He was divine. He clarified His role as a counselor of faith and a promise of eternal reward, defining what is and what has been; revealing the Father's will that He accomplishes, as well as what He commissions humanity to undertake. Who among us could rationally accept that His disciples, whom He appointed as instructors for the nations, who shared in His earthly journey, learned from Him, and lived in close fellowship with Him, could remain ignorant of truth? He personally elaborated on every matter that needed clarification, assuring them, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given" (Matthew 13:11).

In summation, the declaration stands: He who has ears to hear, let him hear. The Lord further imparted His teachings through parables, intended for the Apostles to ensure that these messages would be deeply implanted and capture their focus.

In order to deepen the disciples' understanding of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, the Savior imparted several additional parables that elaborated on the central theme. In the parable of the sower, the act of planting the seed was clarified, along with the varying outcomes for that seed within different hearts. The Savior further illuminated the seed's capacity to flourish within a willing soul. The Kingdom of God is akin to a mustard seed (Matt. 13:31-32, Mk. 4:30-34), which, although one of the tiniest seeds, grows into a magnificent tree, allowing birds of the air to find refuge in its branches. Similarly, it is compared to leaven that a woman mixes into three measures of flour until the entire batch has risen.

Just as the mustard seed naturally transforms into a large tree, and the leaven inevitably influences all the dough, the New Testament kingdom, despite its modest beginnings, is destined to extend its reach across the entire world and infuse it with its essence. Establishing this kingdom would not require drastic upheavals or fierce conflicts, as many of his listeners might have thought. Instead, the Savior conveyed that the kingdom of heaven would prevail through the inherent power of truth, and through that same power—faith and love—it would renew the world.

He spoke to them exclusively in parables during this time and regarding this topic. To His disciples in private, He clarified everything because they, due to their continuous fellowship with the Master, were more equipped to comprehend the secrets of the kingdom than the average person; they had already been granted insight into these mysteries (Matt. 13:11). Moreover, the disciples were soon to assume the role of teachers to all nations, necessitating specific preparation for this important task. The Lord equipped them by providing deeper understanding in private, revealing the spiritual significance behind the veiled meanings of the Kingdom of God that lay within the parables.
