The Church Fathers on this verse

6 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

They brought all the infirm to Him, but their approach had changed significantly. Instead of inviting Him into their homes or requesting His physical touch or a spoken command, they instead sought healing with extraordinary discernment and abundant faith. The woman suffering from bleeding exemplified this wisdom for all. The evangelist notes that to indicate Jesus had not been in this region for long: “When the people of that place recognized Him, they sent word to the surrounding area and brought to Him all the sick.” Notably, time did not diminish their faith; rather, it strengthened and sustained it in all its vigor.

Theophylact of Bulgaria

11th centuryChurch Father

During His extended time in the region of Gennesaret, the people came to recognize Jesus not merely by appearance but also through the signs and wonders He performed...

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

They identified Him through His words rather than His looks; perhaps it was the magnitude of the miracles He worked among the people that led to their recognition, for many did not recognize Him by His outward form. Consider the remarkable faith of the people from the region of Gennesaret; they are not satisfied with merely healing those in their midst, but they also reach out to neighboring towns, leading all to come to the Healer.

Abbot Panteleimon about the Trinity

19th centuryCommentator

The residents of that area, upon recognizing Him, went throughout the entire region to proclaim His presence, bringing on beds all those who were ill. Wherever He traveled, be it in villages, towns, cities, or countryside, they positioned the sick in open spaces,

Bogolepow D.P.

19th centuryCommentator

As Christ arrived at the shores of Gennesaret by the Sea of Galilee, news of His presence swiftly circulated throughout the area. The residents of the surrounding villages began bringing the sick on their beds to where He was, laying them out in the open and pleading for Him to at least touch the edge of His robe. Those who reached out to touch Him were made whole. However, Jesus continued His journey toward Capernaum and soon reached that place.

Paul Matwejewski

19th centuryCommentator

Upon arriving at the shore, Jesus Christ and his disciples were recognized by the local people, who quickly spread the news throughout the region and began bringing the sick on their beds to where Jesus was said to be. The faith of those who gathered was so fervent that they requested only to touch the fringe of his garment, and all who reached out were made whole. The compassionate Lord continually served as a steadfast source of divine assistance for the suffering: in every location he visited—be it villages, towns, or cities—people positioned the afflicted in public spaces, seeking the opportunity to touch even the edge of his robe, and all who came into contact with him received healing. That same day, the Lord returned to Capernaum, his frequent place of residence.
