As He granted them the freedom to express themselves, He also corrected them; both actions served their salvation. Observe how He balanced strictness with gentleness. He almost expresses regret for His forthright rebuke when He inquires, "Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves for five thousand men, and how many baskets you collected? Or the seven loaves for four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?" Although the Lord spoke nothing further, after reproaching them, He simply added, "How do you not understand that I was not speaking about bread when I warned you, 'Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees'?" The evangelist notes that at that moment, they realized He was referring not to the leaven of bread but to the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees, which He did not clarify. Witness the beneficial effects of that admonition! It urged them to move away from their Jewish customs, encouraged diligence in place of indifference, and liberated them from pride and unbelief. Consequently, they ceased to fear and tremble over their limited provisions, showing indifference to merely fulfilling their hunger, and looked down upon such things entirely.
