    And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

    The Fathers mostly read the rock as Peter's confession, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." Theophylact of Bulgaria calls this confession the foundation for all believers, and Augustine of Hippo identifies the rock ultimately with Christ Himself. The gates of hell are persecutors, heresies and sins, which assail the Church but cannot overcome it.
