Moses is depicted as interceding with God on behalf of those who have transgressed.
They fell flat on their face, and said: O most mighty, the God of the spirits of all flesh, for one man's sin shall thy wrath rage against all?
3 Church Fathers comment on this verse
Moses is depicted as interceding with God on behalf of those who have transgressed.
Korah, Dathan, and Abiron, who defied Moses and Aaron and sought to claim the privilege of offering sacrifices for themselves, faced swift retribution for their insurrection. The earth opened its mouth and engulfed them alive, and the fury of the Lord did not spare just the instigators; fire from heaven quickly consumed the two hundred and fifty others who had allied with them in their misguided rebellion. This serves as a grave reminder that any efforts by the wicked to overthrow the Divine decree stand in opposition to God.
The uprising stemmed from a discontented heart, which often leads to perilous and destructive outcomes. It can be observed that an individual becomes irritated and prone to wrath either due to the sinful deeds of others or harsh speech. This idea is illustrated by Dathan and Abiron, who incited the people and vehemently sought recognition for themselves over Moses and Aaron. Consequently, they faced retribution, having provoked the righteous to anger, driven by their envy, which was recognized as offensive to the Lord. This serves as a testament to the Lord's faithfulness, as He asserts that He will safeguard His servants. The earth opened up and engulfed Dathan, while it consumed the followers of Abiron.
As recorded in the Book of Numbers, this event was witnessed by many, particularly those who, with the venomous influence of jealousy, attempted to seize the divine favor bestowed upon Aaron and Moses, in their misguided quest for the honor that they knew was granted by God’s grace. A similar fate awaited them because the same issue was the root of the division: those who relied on worldly wisdom were overwhelmed by the earth, testifying to their wrongful acts.
