The priests, along with Aaron, represent the holy and esteemed visage of the sacred Apostles, as if they are "co-workers with God" (1 Cor. 3:9), guardians and "builders of the mysteries of God" (1 Cor. 4:1), and the "only ministers" we have faith in (1 Cor. 3:5). Anyone who desires to understand the structure of the Church would justly be amazed at its foreshadowing within the law. The bishops, who hold the role of leaders, as well as the presbyters of a lower order, are entrusted with the altar and what lies beyond the veil.

It is appropriate to affirm, "let them maintain their priesthood," and to the deacons, "Let them remain vigilant for Him and for the entire congregation." Do they not instruct the congregation by announcing in the churches that the people should sing and stand in order, often reminding them to maintain silence, while also encouraging prayer? When the unbloody sacrifice is offered, do they not handle the most sacred vessels and oversee all necessary actions with precision? Indeed, the high priests serve as priests; the Levites assist in this role, illustrating how the letter of the law prefigures the hierarchy of the ecclesiastical priesthood. The laity, however, are prohibited from engaging in any sacred duties, with severe consequences for those who seek this honor without divine calling: for it is said, "whosoever shall die, shall die," if they approach it lacking divine election.
