The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Why did God instruct that certain holy items be shrouded in blue while others were to be draped in scarlet? The precious artefacts were to be enveloped solely in blue, representing the hue of the heavens. Consequently, what lay beyond the veil was commanded to be covered in shades of scarlet, as punishment is not from the heavens but rests upon the earth due to transgressions of divine law. The scarlet fabric symbolizes the kingdom, yet the kingdom of God is eternal and unchanging. Thus, that which existed outside the tabernacle received both scarlet and blue coverings. In consideration of the Kohathite lineage, God directed that the priests should first cover the tabernacle and other sacred items with these specific veils upon entering the sanctuary. This was to ensure that the descendants of Kohath would not witness the sacred and invisible elements, which could lead to their demise from such a profound vision.
