John Chrysostom
They will face the consequences of their own actions, reaping the results of their endeavors. Is it I who will punish them? They are the ones at fault; they will be filled, as it is stated, with their own cravings.
Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, and shall be filled with their own devices.
וְֽ֭יֹאכְלוּ מִפְּרִ֣י דַרְכָּ֑ם וּֽמִמֹּעֲצֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם יִשְׂבָּֽעוּ׃
3 Church Fathers comment on this verse
They will face the consequences of their own actions, reaping the results of their endeavors. Is it I who will punish them? They are the ones at fault; they will be filled, as it is stated, with their own cravings.
Having had the chance, those who desire salvation and wish to evade the wickedness into which they have descended do not receive the Redeemer, namely Christ.
The essence of these words aligns closely with the Apostle's teaching: Whatever a person sows, that will they also harvest (Galatians 6:7). What brings delight to the wicked will ultimately lead to their downfall. Their downfall is a direct consequence of their lifestyle choices. Having indulged in evil as their sustenance, they must now partake of the cup of God's wrath due to their persistent engagement in it. The essence of these words mirrors the Apostle's message: Whatever a person sows, that will they also harvest (Galatians 6:7). The pleasures sought by the wicked will result in their demise. Their demise is the outcome of their chosen path, as they have consumed wickedness as if it were nourishment, and now they are destined to drink from the cup of divine judgment because of their relentless pursuit of it.
