One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings happiness to their parents and, if in a position of authority, elevates their nation; however, a sycophant only deceives their neighbors, and a rogue stirs up strife in the community. Even a wise person who aligns with a fool cannot find tranquility and will invariably be despised by the wicked. The integrity and fairness of a leader influence their closest allies and the welfare of the populace. Similarly, proper instruction shapes a son's future, and discipline impacts a servant's conduct. It is clear that the unjust incites division, degrades their own spirit, and despises their very soul, whereas the righteous receive honor and safety under the shelter of the Lord. Just as the path of wickedness is detestable to the upright, so too is the righteous individual reviled by the unrighteous.
