Augustine of Hippo

Show me someone who insists on unwavering abstinence and strict adherence to particular vices and moral cleanliness. In this situation, I am wary of pride; I am concerned that such a significant gift may stem from self-importance. The greater the element of self-righteousness it possesses, the more I worry that it may cause sorrow to Him who stands against the arrogant and offers grace to the humble (James 4:6).

Beda Venerabilis

7th centuryChurch Father

To be deserving of walking in His path and reaching the heavenly realm, we are called to endure a redemptive humility in our earthly journey. We must keep in mind the wisdom of Solomon: pride brings a man low, but one who possesses a humble spirit will be honored.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings joy to their parents, and if that person is a ruler, they bring honor to their nation; however, a flatterer merely deceives those around him, and a rogue provokes turmoil within the city. Even a prudent person who associates with a fool cannot find tranquility, and he is consistently despised by the wicked. The integrity and morality of a leader influence not only their closest associates but also the welfare of their community. Similarly, a child’s future is shaped by proper education, and the discipline enforced on a servant impacts their conduct.

It is clear that the wicked sow strife among others, bring shame upon themselves, and harbor hatred for their own souls, while the righteous obtain honor and safety by being sheltered under the Lord's care. Just as the path of the unrighteous is detestable to the just, the righteous are likewise scorned by those who act unjustly.
