The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings joy to their parents and, if they hold a position of authority, brings honor to their nation; however, a sycophant merely entices those around them, while a rogue stirs anger within the community. Even a wise person who partners with a fool cannot find tranquility and is constantly disliked by the unjust. The integrity and fairness of a leader impact their closest allies and the well-being of their populace, just as a child’s future is influenced by their upbringing and a slave’s conduct is shaped by discipline. It is evident that the wicked instigate strife among others, degrade their own worth, and despise their very existence. In contrast, the righteous receive honor and safety through the safeguarding of the Lord. Just as the path of the wicked is detestable to the just, so too are the righteous objects of animosity for the unrighteous.
