John Chrysostom

Son, you are called to proclaim wisdom and related truths. He urges you to desire wisdom, and thus the power of understanding will heed your call.

Ireneus (Orda)

The wise individual recognizes the call of Wisdom herself. She cries out to humanity from elevated and bustling places, and as she reveals her hands brimming with truth and significance, she illustrates her divine attributes and actions as the incarnate Wisdom. She bestows upon her adherents strength, wealth, and success. As a co-creator alongside God, she plays a part in the formation of the world; now she extends an invitation for all to heed her teachings, assuring them of wisdom and joy. The Lord established me as the beginning of His ways, in His works.

The original Hebrew text indicates 'kanani,' meaning 'acquired.' Therefore, rather than relying on the Greek term 'εκτίσε'—meaning 'created'—the more accurate interpretation, as supported by early church fathers in their discussions against heresies, aligns with 'εκτησατο,' which translates as 'possessed.' This is further echoed in the Vulgate translation of Psalm 138:13.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

In this passage, Divine Wisdom is depicted as a guide for humanity, drawing individuals to her through the abundance of her gifts. My child, proclaim wisdom so that your intellect may heed you. Declare wisdom: this refers to Divine Wisdom, or God Himself, its source. It is illustrated here as the authority to which human reasoning must yield. Solomon urges his pupil to articulate the teachings of Wisdom, encouraging the mind to be receptive to these truths and to humbly follow the direction of Divine Wisdom. How can Solomon's pupil grasp the teachings of Wisdom that he is tasked to share with his intellect? This will be explored further.
