8 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Hippolytus of Rome

2nd centuryChurch Father

And when they have proclaimed all these things, they will fall by the sword, killed by the devil. They will complete their testimony, as Daniel also says of this. He foresaw that the beast ascending from the abyss would make war against them, that is, against Enoch, Elijah, and John. He would overcome them and kill them because they do not wish to give glory to the devil, that is, to the little horn that ascends. Having become puffed up in heart, he will finally begin to proclaim and glorify himself as God. At the same time, he will persecute the saints and blaspheme Christ (see Dan 7).

Victorinus of Poetovio

3rd centuryChurch Father

“These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth,” that is, in Paradise (cf. Zech 4:11-14). Thus, after many wounds have been inflicted upon the world, that which John designates by the words “the beast that comes up from the abyss” must be destroyed.

To confirm that he is about to come up from the abyss, we should bring forward many testimonies in this chapter. For example, Isaiah says: “Behold, Asshur was a cypress on Mount Lebanon.” Victorinus wrongly attributes this passage to Isaiah; see Ezek 31:3.

Asshur means one who oppresses the rest. The tall, branching cypress is a multitude of people. “On Mount Lebanon” means in the kingdom of kingdoms. “Beautiful in fruit” means strong in armies. “The waters,” it says, “made it grow” (Ezek 31:4), that is, many thousands of people who will be subject to him. “The abyss supported him,” that is, it spewed him forth.

Paul also testified that the antichrist was in the kingdom of kingdoms and among the Caesars. For he writes in the Epistle to the Thessalonians: “Only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. And then that one will be revealed, whose coming, according to the working of Satan, will be with signs and lying wonders” (cf. 2 Thess 2:7-9).

And so that they might know that the one was about to come who was then preparing to come and who was then a prince, Paul adds: “The mystery of lawlessness is already at work” (2 Thess 2:7). That is, the lawlessness he intends to produce, he already works in secret. Yet it is accomplished not by his own power or his father’s, but by God’s command.

Therefore Paul said: because they did not receive the love of God, God sent them a spirit of delusion, so that all who did not believe the truth might believe a lie (2 Thess 2:10-12). Isaiah says: “For those who wait for light, darkness was born” (Isa 59:9).

Andrew of Caesarea

6th centuryChurch Father

[...] and he will leave their bodies unburied in Jerusalem, ancient and desolated, where Christ suffered. In this city the antichrist will establish his kingdom and royal throne in imitation of David. According to the flesh, Christ, our true God, was David's Son. He will do this to show that he is the Christ who fulfills the prophecy: "I will raise up the fallen tabernacle of David, and rebuild its ruins" (Amos 9:11). The Jews, in their error, apply this prophecy to his coming.

Oecumenius

6th centuryChurch Father

They testify that this one is not Christ, but a liar, deceiver, and destroyer. Soon the Son of God will come, in Whom one must believe as Savior and God. He will come to benefit mankind, both those who appeared before and those now appearing.

It is said: “the beast that comes up from the abyss.” He calls the antichrist a beast because of his cruelty, inhumanity, and bloodthirstiness. He calls human life an abyss, bitter and salty from sins, and troubled by the assaults of the spirits of wickedness. For the sinner is not born from some other essence, but from our human nature. The antichrist will be a man, “whose coming is according to the working of Satan” (2 Thess 2:9), as was just said.

It is said that the beast will kill the two witnesses and cast their unburied corpses into the streets of Jerusalem. There he will reign as king of the Jews, whom he will deceive, so that men may serve and obey him in everything. As the Lord says in John: “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive” (Jn 5:43).

He calls Jerusalem Sodom spiritually, not sensibly, because of the licentiousness and dishonor then present. He calls it Egypt because it enslaved and outraged the servants of Christ, as that Egypt did Israel. “Where,” it says, “our Lord also,” that is, the Lord of the two witnesses, “was crucified.”

Beda Venerabilis

John openly shows that all this will happen before the final persecutions, saying: “when they have finished their testimony.” At least, that to which they bear witness will occur before the manifestation of the beast, who will come forth from the hearts of the ungodly.

Relying on this testimony, they will fiercely contend with their opponents. Yet, according to tradition, at that time the gift of perfection will be taken from the Church, while the adversary will openly shine with lying wonders. As the Lord says, “terror runs before him” (Job 41:14).

“And he will conquer them and kill them.” He will conquer those who yield. He will kill those who suffer gloriously for the name of Christ and perish. If “conquer” and “kill” are taken spiritually, we should understand this to mean that some will remain as witnesses.

In the Gospel the Lord says: “They will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you” (Mt 24:9). Luke the Evangelist also speaks of some: “Some of you they will put to death” (Lk 21:16).

“And he will leave their bodies in the street of the great city.” It is said: “If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you” (Jn 15:20). It is no wonder that the city of the ungodly, which did not fear to crucify the Lord, will mock even His dead servants. From Church history we see that this often happened.

“Which spiritually is called Sodom,” and so forth. That is, mute and covered with darkness, having neither the light of faith nor the voice of confession. For “with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Rom 10:10). As a visible sign of spiritual punishment, plagues fell upon these places: devouring fire and water turned to blood.

Anthemios of Jerusalem

19th centuryChurch Father

The bodies of these preachers of the coming of the Righteous Judge, after they are killed, will remain unburied for three and a half days. This corresponds to the number of years of their prophecy, and they will lie in the court of Jerusalem.

Their bodies remaining unburied and lying in the court of the city is a divine economy. Those who suffer evil for Christ will draw from it the fruit of consolation and encouragement. They will see such prophets of God put to death and dishonored by men for the love of God, yet glorified by the Rewarder. They will receive the Spirit of God and be taken up into the heavens.

This is also a proof of the sins of ungodly men. Many, seeing the prophets in such dishonor and then seeing them abiding in honor and glory, will be moved to faith in God. Moreover, this shows the implacability of those who plot evil against the faithful, since even after death they did not show them mercy.

Jerusalem is the holy city, because, according to the prophet Isaiah, peace rested in it, namely Christ God, the Master of universal peace. Yet in the last time Jerusalem will be likened to Sodom through the corruption of the antichrist, and to Egypt through the violence of his followers.

Furthermore, Jerusalem should also be understood as the synagogue of the Jews, from whom and among whom the antichrist reigns. They will receive him, as the Lord foretold: “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name,” that is, calls himself Christ, “him you will receive” (Jn 5:43).

Borodin P.M.

19th centuryChurch Father

If truth sometimes seems conquered for a time, and if its witnesses appear dishonored and destroyed, this is only so that truth may be given the opportunity to triumph. It will appear with new power, just as the Lord rose after being put to death on the Cross.

Ivanov A.V.

19th centuryChurch Father

"It is spiritually called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified." This last definition compels one to see Jerusalem directly here. But Roman interpreters refer this expression to Rome, in whose domain Jesus Christ was crucified, or was being crucified in His members, the Christians. Yet no firm grounds are given for putting Rome in place of Jerusalem.
