Andrew of Caesarea

6th centuryChurch Father

"And authority was given him over every tribe and tongue." He will use his authority against every tribe and people, but he will gain possession only of those whose names are not written in the book of life.

Oecumenius

6th centuryChurch Father

As I have already said, he received authority from those men who of their own will submitted to his destructive dominion. Well is it said, "And all who dwell on the earth will worship him."

For apart from God-fearing Israel, which had already undergone this, every other race of men and every tribe worshiped the sinner.

"Whose names are not written in the heavenly book of life of the One slain from the foundation of the world." The vision sets very clear limits. Although it is said that all who dwell on the earth will worship the apostate devil, there were also many who did not stain themselves by serving him.

Some were from the nations and some from Israel, such as Job, his four friends, Melchizedek, the holy prophets of Israel, and those whose piety is witnessed in the Old Testament.

All worshiped him except those who, through piety, strictness, and purity of life, are enrolled in heaven and guarded by God. This is indicated by the fact that the book is sealed.

The Lord speaks of this book to His holy disciples in the divine Luke: "Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven" (Lk 10:20).

Primasius of Hadrumetum

6th centuryChurch Father

The words, "he opened his mouth," show that the Antichrist appeared with shameful bravado. What he had earlier blasphemed in secret, he now dared to blaspheme openly, when he dared to claim for himself the honor given uniquely to Christ.

He speaks impious words arrogantly because he is Christ's enemy and desires to be received as Christ. He does this either by forcing himself upon men or by subjecting them through deceit.

For a time he will receive authority, using it for evil and wishing to harm the Body of Christ. Yet Christ is glorified all the more by persecutors through the suffering inflicted upon Him. For this reason Christ is crucified ever more mercilessly with His saints.

The Lord says of this: "You would have no authority over Me unless it had been given you from above" (Jn 19:11). Therefore, if Christ gave it to His persecutors during His Passion, although the prince of this world found nothing in Him worthy of death, what is surprising here?

Is it surprising if, in His Church, He sometimes permits the impious to attack, so that their victory may be proclaimed? Clearly, one must understand from the whole that part which is capable of being overcome.

Borodin P.M.

19th centuryChurch Father

The ideology of paganism bitterly drove Christianity out of every province of every state in all times. The disciples of Christ were ready for this (cf. Mt 10:23). Yet a time will come when no genuine Christians remain. St Andrew says: "The beast will use evil authority over every tribe and tongue, but he will rule only those whose names are not written in the book of life."

Ignatij (Briantchaninow)

19th centuryChurch Father

The reason for the Antichrist's powerful influence over men will lie in his infernal cunning and hypocrisy. With these he will skillfully cover the most dreadful evil. It will also lie in his unbridled and shameless audacity, in the abundant aid of fallen spirits, and finally in his ability to work miracles.

These miracles will be false, yet astonishing. Human imagination is powerless to picture the villain that the Antichrist will be. It is not natural for the human heart, even a corrupt one, to believe that evil could reach the degree it will reach in the Antichrist.

He will sound a trumpet about himself, as his forerunners and images sounded theirs. He will call himself the preacher and restorer of the true knowledge of God. Those who do not understand Christianity will see in him a representative and champion of true religion, and will join themselves to him.

He will sound the trumpet and call himself the promised Messiah. Those nurtured on fleshly wisdom will cry out to meet him. Seeing his glory, power, genius, and vast development according to the elements of the world, they will proclaim him god and become his helpers.

The Antichrist will present himself as meek, merciful, full of love, and full of every virtue. Those who take fallen human righteousness for truth, and who have not renounced it for the righteousness of the Gospel, will recognize him as such and submit to him because of his exalted virtue.

The Antichrist will offer mankind the ordering of the highest earthly prosperity and well-being. He will offer honors, wealth, magnificence, bodily comforts, and pleasures. The seekers of earthly things will accept the Antichrist and call him their lord.

The Antichrist will open before mankind a spectacle of astonishing miracles, like the contrived performances of the theater, inexplicable to contemporary science. By the thunder and wonder of his miracles he will inspire fear. He will satisfy with them reckless curiosity and crude ignorance.

He will satisfy human vainglory and pride. He will satisfy fleshly wisdom and superstition, and will confound human learning. All men who are guided by the light of their fallen nature, having estranged themselves from the guidance of the light of God, will be drawn into obedience to the deceiver.

Makarios (Bulgakow)

19th centuryChurch Father

The Antichrist will raise up a fierce persecution against Christians. He will demand divine worship for himself from all, will draw many after him, and will put to death those who do not follow him.

"And it was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them" (cf. Dan 7:21). "And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" (v. 8).

"And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast should speak, and to cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be killed" (Rev 13:15).

Michail Cheraskov

19th centuryChurch Father

He will be marked by blasphemy and by every kind of violence against those who do not submit to him, that is, against the saints. "He will open his mouth for blasphemy against God," saying, for example, that He is not the one true God.

He will blaspheme the name of God, that is, His nature and attributes. He will say, for example, that He is not almighty, not holy, and the like. He will open blasphemous lips against His dwelling, that is, against the holy Church of the Lord.

In Scripture, the Church is also called the dwelling or temple of God (1 Cor 3:16-17). He will even spew blasphemy against those who dwell in heaven, that is, against those who have departed in piety and faith in Christ.

So broad and shameless a torrent of blasphemous speeches and judgments of the Antichrist will pour forth upon the earth.

The God-inspired seer of mysteries also observes that it will be given to him to wage war against the saints and to overcome them. From these words it is evident that, despite the universal corruption and unbelief of men before the end of the world, the Antichrist will not find sympathy for his words and deeds in all men.

Although "all who dwell on the earth will worship him," this means only those "whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." Against this remnant of holy and pious men he will arm himself with every violence.

It will be given to him to overcome them. This does not mean, of course, that they will submit to him or pass over to his side. It means that, for a time, he will commit his violence against them unhindered and unpunished.

Only their bodies, not their souls, will be for a time in the power of the Antichrist. The saints will defend themselves by patience and faith alone, until righteous retribution overtakes both the Antichrist himself and all his accomplices.

"He who kills with the sword must himself be killed," the seer of mysteries observes on this point. "Here," that is, by this truth, "are the patience and the faith of the saints."
