In that Kingdom He promised His servants: “Everyone who has left father or mother or brothers or sisters for My name’s sake shall receive a hundredfold and inherit eternal life” (Mt 19:29). In that Kingdom those deprived of possessions for the name of the Lord will receive their consolation, that is, the crown and heavenly riches. So too will many who were killed amid various crimes and in prisons. For before the Lord’s coming the holy prophets were stoned, killed, and sawn in two; cf. Heb 11:36-37. In that Kingdom the Lord promised that He would restore the years consumed by the locust, the worms, and destruction (Joel 2:25). There the wholeness of creation will be preserved, and by God’s command it will bring forth from itself its hidden goods.

There the saints will receive gold instead of bronze, silver instead of iron, and precious stones (Isa 60:17). There the wealth of the sea and the dignities of the nations will turn to them (Isa 60:5). In that Kingdom they will be called priests of the Lord, ministers of God (Isa 61:6), though now they are called impious. In that Kingdom they will drink wine, anoint themselves with ointment, and give themselves to joy; cf. Amos 6:6; Isa 25:6-7. The Lord remembered this Kingdom before He suffered, saying to the apostles: “I shall not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine until I drink new wine with you in the coming Kingdom” (Mt 26:29). This is what the hundredfold means, that is, ten thousand times more or less. For when he says that they will be adorned with stones differing in kind and color, he is speaking of people. Yet he also points to the most precious diversity of faith in individual persons. The apostle notes that the gates are pearls. “They will not be shut,” he said, meaning that grace has been given through them, and it is never shut.
