Victorinus of Poetovio
Concerning the angel descending from the rising of the sun, John speaks of the prophet Elijah. He was to anticipate the time of the Antichrist, in order to restore and strengthen the churches against unbearable persecution. We read of this in the opening of the book both of the Old Testament and of the New Proclamation.

For the Lord says through Malachi: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the heart of a man to his neighbor” (Mal 4:5-6), that is, to Christ through repentance. To turn the hearts of the fathers to the children means, after the time of calling, to call the Jews anew to the faith of the people that follows after them. Therefore John indicates both the number of those Jews who are to believe and the great multitude from the Gentiles.
In Victorinus the reading is descendentem, “descending,” not ascendentem, “ascending,” as in the Greek of Rev 7:2. According to ancient tradition, Elijah was taken alive into heaven (cf. 4 Kgs 2) and will come at the end of time to bear witness to Christ. See also Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies.
The Synodal translation reads: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”
