The Church Fathers on this verse

Zechariah 1:6Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

But yet my words, and my ordinances, which I gave in charge to my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers, and they returned, and said: As the Lord of hosts thought to do to us according to our ways, and according to our devices, so he hath done to us.

Cyrill of Alexandria

But due to their carelessness and rebellion, they faced destruction along with their deceivers. However, you should listen attentively to the messages of the holy prophets and hold their words in high regard, for they have communicated to your forebears that 'The Lord has resolved to act,' specifically regarding the exile and the tribulations that would come upon them. They admonished them clearly, saying, 'As you have lived and labored, so shall it be done unto you.' The Almighty does not punish without cause, nor does His perfect and just judgment make hasty declarations; rather, He exercises great patience before meting out deserved consequences upon those who transgress.

Therefore, it is wise to follow divine commandments, to honor the prophecies of the saints, and to accept the truths of the Spirit with faith, believing that all that has been revealed will indeed come to pass, so that we may transform for the better and pursue repentance.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Where have your ancestors and prophets gone? Will they endure forever? Yet my words and decrees that I entrusted to my servants, the prophets, were disregarded by your forebears. They turned and declared, ‘As the Lord of Hosts intended to act toward us, based on our actions and plans, so has He treated us.’ LXX: Where are your forefathers and the prophets? Will they exist for all time? However, you dismiss my words and the directives I impart to my servants, the prophets; they have not heeded your ancestors. They responded, saying, ‘As the Lord Almighty prepared to deal with us according to our ways and our deeds, so has He done to us.’ Where, He questions, are your fathers who have not heeded or hastened toward Me? Where are your prophets?

This is to be interpreted broadly, suggesting a degree of exaggeration: Where are your ancestors, and where are your false prophets? For the true prophets would never be described by the question of whether they will live eternally. Thus, when both those who sinned and rejected Me, along with those who misled them with false assurances, succumb to death, My declarations through My prophets endure forever. They have remained steadfast for your ancestors, demonstrating that what I have proclaimed is indeed true. After the passing of My prophets, these forebears, witnessing the fulfillment of their predictions, turned in repentance and acknowledged, ‘As the Lord of Hosts foretold regarding us, He has recompensed us in accordance with our deeds and transgressions.’ Let us consider how Daniel confesses to the Lord on behalf of himself and the people, recognizing that they failed to listen to Him, thereby justly experiencing the consequences of their actions.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Consider the veracity of My statements, declares the Lord, as the Prophets have arisen from this existence, and your ancestors face consequences for their actions, yet My words endure, revealing their authenticity through tangible actions. Without the Prophets who articulated these truths acting as advocates on their behalf—having already undergone the final judgement—they themselves proclaim and affirm that no untruth is contained within their messages. Thus, embrace with earnestness what the Holy Spirit delivers to you through the Prophets.

They responded by stating, ‘As the Lord Almighty has decreed, we shall be judged according to our conduct and endeavors, and so shall it be with us.’ They concurred with the declarations made, acknowledged the truth, recognized their offenses, and confirmed that the prophecy was accurate, affirming that God's wrath was just and the retribution fitting in relation to their transgressions.
