John Chrysostom

What does she express? Initially, her voice is silent, but she starts to weep, releasing streams of warm tears. Just as the dry ground, refreshed and made fertile by rain, is stirred to produce fruit, so too this woman finds her heart, softened by her tears and warmed by her grief, awakening to the potential for new life.

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

There were two women honored with the name Anna. One was a married woman who bore Samuel, while the other was a widow who recognized the Holy of Holies during his childhood. The married Anna poured out her soul in prayer, experiencing deep sorrow for her childlessness. In response to her heartfelt supplication, the Lord granted her Samuel, whom she consecrated to God's service for his entire life, having made a vow during her prayers. Her prayer exhibits some resemblance to the ‘Our Father,’ particularly in the request to be delivered from the evil one. This evident challenge was her struggle with being married yet having no children, as her only reason for sustaining the lineage was through offspring.

Dimitri of Rostov

17th centuryChurch Father

She fell prostrate, expressing her deepest grief to the Lord.
