Quiet prayer, akin to the serene Mary at Christ's feet, offers a far greater openness to learning than the busy and self-driven mind of Martha, which engages in countless discussions filled with its own wisdom and external sources of knowledge. Observe how the Archangel Gabriel instructs Daniel about the hidden truths, simultaneously revealing how the Prophet reached such profound understanding. ‘While I was yet speaking in prayer,’ the Prophet recounts, ‘behold, the man Gabriel came forth to me, and said, Daniel, I have now come to make you understand. At the beginning of your supplications, the command went forth, and I have come to inform you, for you are greatly beloved’ (Dan. 9:21-23). What an incredible school of God!

The learner exists on earth, while the teacher resides in heaven; as soon as the learner desires heavenly wisdom, the brilliance of revelation illuminates the heavens, and the word of God is brought down to earth by the heavenly messenger. You shall gain understanding, the Archangel tells the Prophet, for you are a person of prayer: ‘As one beloved you are.’ Let no one think that this instance is not relevant to them simply because they are not a prophet. What reason is there that you cannot be included? We can only deduce that while perhaps an Archangel may not be dispatched to you, nor will revelations of judgments be conveyed, at the very least, one of the lesser angels—what the Church refers to as ‘a reliable teacher’—is able to impart essential truths for your salvation; just allow him access through your prayers, ‘as one beloved you are.’
