Jerome of Stridon

It is beneficial for you to hold firmly to this principle; however, do not allow your resolve to weaken. The one who reveres God will be revitalized in all matters. It is commendable to do good for the righteous, yet it is not unjust to extend kindness to transgressors. While it is commendable to maintain your fellow servants in faith, you are commanded to assist all who seek help. For the one who honors God and reflects the nature of the Creator, who bestows blessings upon both the just and the unjust, eagerly does good to everyone without partiality. Given that this earthly existence is frequently subject to various changes, both favorable and unfavorable, let the spirit of the righteous prepare and call upon the Lord's mercy to endure whatever may come. For the one who fears God is not swayed by joy nor disheartened by adversity.

Gregory the Wonderworker

3rd centuryChurch Father

The highest virtue lies in remaining steadfast in God, living in Him, and avoiding sin in every way. It is repugnant to contaminate what is pure with an unclean hand. Yet, the one who obeys out of reverence for God steers clear of all that opposes His will.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The wise individual ought to focus their attention on the ultimate purpose of life. It is far more beneficial to remember the fleeting and trivial nature of worldly pleasures than to indulge in misleading joys derived from them. The preacher observes that given the insignificance of earthly pursuits, everyone should be cautious about feelings of dissatisfaction and impatience. When embarking on a new endeavor, one should examine it carefully and refrain from opposing it with arrogance; often, matters conclude more favorably than they commence. Therefore, it is prudent to await the outcome with patience. Complaining is the work of those who rebel against God’s sovereign rule.

Possessing wisdom surpasses having material wealth; it is wisdom that grants life. We should refrain from grumbling about evil, instead accepting it with the understanding that it can be part of God’s purpose, and we must yield patiently to His direction. Neither self-righteousness nor carelessness leads to true happiness; rather, it is the reverence for God that provides fulfillment, because human righteousness is inherently flawed. We should disregard slander and gossip. The preacher’s quest for wisdom did not render him wise; he discovered that the temptation to sin is pervasive, with woman personifying sin as noted in Proverbs. During his pursuit of holiness, he often found guidance from men, but rarely from women. While it may seem that finding the straight path is a challenge, it is not due to God’s creation but rather the deceit of the human heart.
