One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

He unleashed hail and thunder upon them, demonstrating His authority over all elements of creation. The Egyptians and Greeks believed that certain deities were celestial, while others were terrestrial or dwelled beneath the earth, with some governing the land and others the sea, and some holding sway over the mountains, while others ruled the plains. This led the Syrians to declare that the God of the mountains is the God of Israel, not the God of the Judolii. Therefore, the God of all humanity had to convey His message through signs, not just along the river and on land, but also in the skies and the seas, sending down lightning from above to reveal that He is the Creator and Sovereign over all. These truths were also proclaimed by the blessed Moses to Pharaoh, emphasizing that the earth is the Lord's, for you and your servants alike (Ex. 9:29-30).
