Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

I will place his blood upon the polished stone, so that it remains visible; for their transgression will be laid bare until the day of ultimate judgment arrives. Soon after, God reveals to the prophet that his spouse will unexpectedly pass away. See Ezekiel 24:16.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

For his blood is among them, meaning that they will endure it as a consequence for numerous wrongful killings. Upon a solid rock I have initiated it: I will not let it spill onto the ground, to blanket the earth, to unleash my fury for retribution: I will place his blood upon the solid rock, so that I do not conceal it: in other words, I will not hide the transgressions they have committed, but I will reveal them in all their stark reality, displaying them to all, just as the blood which is neither poured out on the ground nor absorbed by the earth, but is cast upon the solid rock, where it is eternally preserved for the indictment of those who dared to shed it.
