The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

He fears all these occurrences, instructing them to weep and grieve. He refers to the day as a period of judgment and identifies the cloud as a symbol of distress, representing the inner turmoil experienced during times of hardship, while he designates the time of tongues as the retribution that will come upon the nations outside of Israel. God declares that none of my people will endure these tribulations, but the nations will face punishment for their evil deeds.
