The Lord is present, or as some interpreters render it: "Thou, Lord, art there." This not only condemns their insatiable greed and desire but also highlights their extreme impiety, echoing the boastful assertions of Sennacherib; he declared, "The Lord shall not remove Jerusalem from my hand" (4 Sam. 18:35). Similarly, the Idumeans audaciously claimed, "Though the Lord be in Jerusalem, we will possess both countries." However, the Almighty, in leading Israel out of Egypt, instructed them not to engage the Idumeans in conflict, saying, "You shall not make war with them" (Deuteronomy 2:5), as they are your brothers. Consequently, when their path was blocked, the Israelites obeyed and circled around the mountain and the wilderness.

God had previously declared to Israel, "I will not give it unto thee, for I have given it by lot to the children of Esau." Yet the Idumeans, unsatisfied with the blessings bestowed upon them by God, aspired to claim the territory of the Jews. The God of all nations rightly warns them of impending judgment and reinforces His decree with an oath.
