Theodoret of Cyrus

The location will henceforth be known as the place of downfall and the abundant burial, and the earth will be purified. In this manner, having foreseen these events, God instructs the birds and animals to assemble, much like a feast, prompted by the countless number of fallen bodies. He issues this command, not as though they possess understanding, but to affirm to those who do, that these actions occur by His will. God proclaimed, "Ye shall eat the flesh of bullocks, sheep, lambs, goats, and fat oxen of all," in a symbolic sense; He referred to rulers, princes, and their leaders as bullocks, sheep, goats, and oxen, while His people were likened to lambs. Furthermore, He compared their demise to His own sacrifice, which was carried out in accordance with His sovereign design.
