Utterly destroy old and young, maidens, children and women: but upon whomsoever you shall see Thau, kill him not, and begin ye at my sanctuary. So they began at the ancient men who were before the house.

Commencing from the holy place, specifically from the priests who have desecrated the sacred space, as well as from those unrighteous individuals who worship the sun between Elam and the altar.

I shall also express, echoing the words of the blessed Apostle Paul, ‘It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God’ (Hebrews 10:31); and I will include the wisdom of King David, ‘Blessed are they that keep judgment, and do righteousness at all times’ (Psalm 105:3); for on the day of reckoning, the Lord will save them. (Ps. 105: 105.) We can observe both truths in the message delivered by the Prophet; some are mercilessly scattered along with the entire lineage, and their punishment affects all generations, while others are justly preserved and remain separate from the former group.

However, God directs that the punitive measures begin with those who are consecrated to Him, not in the strict sense of being called saints, but because they are revered as saints, set apart for divine service. This reference is not about sacred locations, as some have misconceived, but pertains to individuals dedicated to God’s service. This becomes clear from the subsequent words of the prophecy; the prophet continues, stating that they began with the elders who were present within the house. He commands that they are to meet their end within the house; for there is where they have engaged in wrongdoing; there they shall rightfully endure punishment. For the Prophet declares:

If those appointed to the priesthood encounter scripture instructing them not to engage in virtuous practices but merely to teach verbally, let them continue in the mindset they have chosen. However, if the Word of God consistently commends those who pursue virtue and rejects those who wish to teach solely through words, why do they neglect the commands of the Divine and elevate the priesthood as a self-sufficient authority? The Divine mandates require those who hold the priestly office to be primarily devoted to service and accomplishments, setting an example for others. When the faithful observe those in authority diligently laboring, they are encouraged to aspire to a noble life out of respect. Often, it is not merely words that inspire action but the character of the instructors.

Yet, these teachers, as if solely trained to speak, often fail to act. To bring them to account, the holy Apostle noted, "If you preach against stealing, do you steal?" (Rom. 2:21) Furthermore, in Ezekiel, the Divine command given to the angels sent to mete out judgment upon Jerusalem emphasizes, "Begin at My sanctuary." The first apostle echoed this sentiment by stating, "For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God" (1 Pet. 4:17). If this judgment begins with us, what will be the fate of those who reject the gospel of God? For those bestowed with honor and status, when they err, it is just that they shall bear a heavier share of the consequences.
