John Chrysostom
Judah remarked, ‘So that we do not face judgment for ingratitude,’ though he was unaware of the events that had transpired.
Juda said: Let her take it to herself, surely she cannot charge us with a lie, I sent the kid which I promised: and thou didst not find her.
2 Church Fathers comment on this verse
Judah remarked, ‘So that we do not face judgment for ingratitude,’ though he was unaware of the events that had transpired.
Let her keep it for herself, etc. Judas preferred to forfeit his promise rather than face the scorn of the crowd by continuing his search. However, instead of trying to avoid public shame, wouldn't it have been wiser for Judas to ensure he remained pure in the sight of God and the angels? Considering the blessing that unexpectedly emerged from Judas' transgression, we might conclude that he purified his wrongdoing through repentance, although Scripture here highlights more the external events rather than disclosing the inner workings of the heart.
