John Chrysostom

After three months had gone by, and the signs of pregnancy had become evident, though the clandestine relations remained hidden from others, word reached Judah that Tamar had engaged in illicit relations, and indeed, she was with child as a result of those actions. Upon hearing this news, he declared, "Bring her out, and let her be burned." Such a profound outrage! A harsh sentence, reflecting the gravity of the perceived wrongdoing.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Upon hearing this, Judas declared that the woman deserved death for her acts of immorality. Yet, just as his intentions were about to be executed, she revealed the rod and other tokens, declaring, “I am with child by the owner of these items.” Tamar, although already condemned and facing severe punishment, found salvation. Although she was judged as an immoral woman, she was spared because she presented the rod, the ring, and the necklace. She openly confessed that she had been with Judas and bore his offspring. In due time, Christ will deliver the Jewish synagogue from rightful punishment if it retains the signs of its communion with Him and demonstrates clearly that it has conceived through Him.
